Foraging - May 2017 May - This month we'll do a general plant walk around the property and look at what is in season. We'll spend some time discussing ecological functions of the plants, general observation skills that are useful to the forager, and see what else arises as we explore the property. Each class is two hours in duration. Beginners and experienced foragers are welcome. Be prepared to walk, often at times on muddy or uneven surfaces. Dress for the weather and season! Cycle the Solstice - 2017 On Saturday, June 24, The Cycle Works of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania will be hosting the third annual Cycle the Solstice bicycle ride to benefit The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. Cycle the Solstice is a 10-, 20-, 30-, 62-, or 100-mile fun bike ride through York and Lancaster counties. The ride will offer cycling opportunities for riders of all ages and abilities while providing information about leading healthy lifestyles through supporting fresh, local food production in the region. The proceeds from this healthy, fun family event will be used to underwrite the Horn Farm Center's class offerings which directly supports their mission of connecting the community to local food. Foraging - July 2017 July - This month we'll focus on tea! We can make tea for all occasions, from medicinal teas to target specific ailments, to teas for taste, relaxation, or just to provide additional minerals and nutrients in our diet. We focus on what we can harvest for this purpose and end the class with a sample of tea we make from our harvest. Each class is two hours in duration. Beginners and experienced foragers are welcome. Insect Identification The majority of insects that surround us in the garden (and out) are either beneficial or harmless to human endeavors. Learning to identify the common insects in your area is an essential skill in the gardener's toolbox. Only then can you begin to recognize and support the beneficial insects that are making your job easier and mitigate and prevent the damage from their less helpful counterparts. Hugelkultur Learn about the Hugelkultur gardening technique which consists of large pieces of organic matter, typically wood, buried for the purpose of longterm, slow release of nutrients, maintaining higher moisture content, and increasing the fungal population of the soil. Foraging - October 2017 October - Roots! Now is the time to begin digging roots - as the plants begin to drawn their energies into the ground to store them for winter, we can begin to take advantage of this and dig them up to be used as tasty root vegetables, process and dry them for coffee, tea, and medicine. We'll demonstrate the process for taking them from root to coffee, and possible sample a warm taste before we finish. Each class is two hours in duration.
