Wild Lands - Primitive Skills Fall 2018:

Four all new full-day workshops designed to reconnect you to the land and develop essential survival skills. Register for individual days or the whole session.

Saturdays, 9:00am-4:00pm, beginning September 1.

We’re excited to host four all-new primitive skills workshops for Fall 2018. These new daylong workshops build upon skills taught in our previous Wild Lands series and are also accessible for new students with experience and comfort being in the outdoors. Students should be in good physical condition and be prepared to hike, get dirty, sweaty, and be outdoors regardless of weather. These classes are geared towards adults, but children 12 and up are welcome with a parent.

These classes are being offered as stand-alone one-day workshops but as a group provide a well-rounded introduction into these skills. Discounted package for those signing up for the full four-class session.

9/1: Advanced Camouflage, Stalking,  Awareness:
This task-oriented class will dive into advanced nature awareness techniques involving scout-style games and teamwork activities. Be prepared to hike, get dirty, sweaty, and slightly uncomfortable! You’ll spend time on the ground, in creeks, and barefoot in this hands-on, experiential  class. We’ll do a refresher on basic stalking skills and explore advanced stalking and tracking in the context of hunter and prey - evasion tactics, gravel and water stalking, heightened senses, how to find hiding spots, applying camouflage with natural materials, and more.

9/15: Basketry, Coppicing, Netting:
Participants will explore the art of natural basketry from start to finish - including harvesting and processing wild basket making materials, different types of weaving, and ending with a simple hand made basket. We will also cover coppicing and other methods of managing a woodland for basket materials. We’ll also cover natural cordage (making rope from plant materials), making your own netting needle, and how to use and make netting.

9/22: Hunting, Fishing, Trapping:

Participants will learn primitive methods of hunting, fishing, and trapping - We’ll cover traditional fish baskets, fishing spears, weir construction, and fish hooks. We’ll learn to find and create a ground and tree hunting blind for multiple seasons, how to prepare for hunts, and more. We’ll get hands on experience with several types of advanced traps and large game trappings.

9/29: Primitive Butchering and Cooking:
When it comes to homesteading or hunting, learning to butcher a fresh kill can be daunting. We’ll demystify the process and demonstrate primitive methods of skinning and butchering a fresh kill. We’ll be using a goat which is an excellent analogue for a deer. We’ll cover anatomy, various techniques, piecing out the animal, and using every part of the animal. We’ll discuss hanging, curing, and freezing and will cook and taste part of the goat in the class. The goat will be killed prior to the start of the class - those interested in witnessing and discussing that portion are invited to arrive early.
