Tending the Susquehanna Riverlands Join us for two back-to-back events this September on Regenerative Agroforestry in the Susquehanna Riverlands. Dave Jacke, the founder of Dynamic Ecological Design and primary author of the award winning, two-volume book, Edible Forest Gardens, will give an evening lecture at Columbia Crossing on Friday, September 22nd on how principles of agroforestry can be incorporated into sustainable farming and land management practices to benefit your land and the environment. Meet back at Columbia Crossing the next day, September 23rd, as Mr. Jacke leads a full-day workshop, visiting two Conservancy nature preserves, to see how principles of agroforestry are already being deployed in the Susquehanna Riverlands. http://www.lancasterconservancy.org/am_event/tending-the-susquehanna-riverlands/ (read more...) Foraging - October 2017 October - Roots! Now is the time to begin digging roots - as the plants begin to drawn their energies into the ground to store them for winter, we can begin to take advantage of this and dig them up to be used as tasty root vegetables, process and dry them for coffee, tea, and medicine. We'll demonstrate the process for taking them from root to coffee, and possible sample a warm taste before we finish. Each class is two hours in duration. Beginners and experienced foragers are welcome. Be prepared to walk, often at times on muddy or uneven surfaces. Dress for the weather and season! We meet at the pole barn. (read more...) Forest Garden Design Intensive In this nine-day intensive course, you will dive deeply into the vision, theory, and practice of designing wholesome, dynamic, and resilient edible ecosystems using temperate deciduous forests as models. Dave Jacke and his teaching team will offer lectures, site walks, and experiential classes to help you understand how the architecture, social structure, underground economics, and successional processes of natural forests apply to the design of edible ecosystems of all kinds. You'll learn a variety of ecological design processes while designing a range of food-producing ecosystems at Heritage Creek Farm Camp. Design projects could include designing forest gardens for: urban or suburban homesteads, an educational summer camp, farm-scale (up to 20 acres), or an edible stream corridor. We'll also engage with issues of garden management, economics, and the deep paradigmatic shifts required to succeed at co-creating “humanatural” landscapes and cultures. You will leave inspired and empowered to design food forests at home for yourself, and your friends, neighbors, and clients. (read more...) October 13th, 2017 2:00 PM
