Finally a chance for kids to get connected to the Horn Farm!

We are excited to offer four short sessions for children, aged 6-12, in our new Children's Discovery Series beginning September 2nd. Each class runs an hour and a half. Register for individual days or the four part series.

Research shows positive links between direct experiences in nature and children’s mental, emotional and physical health and well-being. Benefits of nature experiences include increased self-esteem and resilience against stress and adversity; improved concentration, learning, creativity, cognitive development, cooperation, flexibility, and self-awareness; and reduced likelihood of childhood obesity.  Research has also shown that through positive experiences outdoors, children will develop their love of nature and a foundation for the development of responsible environmental behavior. Hands on experience with a bit of freedom for creative exploration is described as the best way to engage and inspire children and cultivate a sense of wonder.

These classes are being offered as stand-alone sessions but as a series provide a well-rounded group of nature and farmed based activities. Discounted package for those signing up for all four sessions.

Parents: Register under your name and fill in your child's name in the space provided at registration. This is a drop off class - you are welcome to relax on the porch, take a stroll on the property, leave and return, or if space allows, observe the class.

Classes run Sundays from 2:30pm-4:00pm.

9/2: Nature Speaks:

This class focuses on building mindfulness techniques and opening to our connection to the earth.  Kid-style mindfulness exercises (meaning that they are adapted for short attention spans and involve some movement and creative imagination) will be interspersed with games/challenges that encourage full focus in the NOW.  We will also go for a walk along the informal walking trail where children will be encouraged to observe the sensations of their walking and “listen” to the natural environment through observation of the senses after which they will give that observation an interpretation of their own.  We will talk about the ecosystem, the trees, water, and sunlight and the importance of all of these elements to life.  Kids will get to make a mini eco system in a mason jar that they can take home and observe the life within.

9/16: Seed to Table:

Kids will get to learn about where their food comes from and even get a chance to prepare a simple nutritional snack for themselves.  We will tour any portion of the farm that is accessible and talk about what is growing there and how the proper conditions and care are important to sustain life.  We will also touch on the importance of the Horn Farm mission to maintain a balanced relationship with our environment through regenerative agriculture. Kids will get to plant a take-home window herb garden of their own! A game will be played to illustrate the web of life and how what one thing does affects all others.  We will prepare a healthy kid-approved snack so that children can get a sense of where this food comes from and gain a deeper respect for natural bounty. We will also prepare a small tin of herbal salve for each child.

9/30: The Compassion Project:

Class begins with a simple experiment outside to illustrate the ripple effects of even small acts of kindness followed by an activity to illustrate the difference between hurtful and kind words and a speed chat to test good listening skills! We will discuss who or what we think we should be kind toward and how we can show kindness to ourselves, to others, and to our environment.  Kids will then color random acts of kindness cards printed on recycled paper that the kids can take home to give or leave out randomly as they see fit. We will have a 100% waste free snack that is healthy as a way of showing kindness to them and caring about their health.  The kids will come up with simple ways that they can show kindness to themselves, their family, strangers, animal friends, and the environment in the day to day (with help). We will then show our kindness for all living things by making 100% biodegradable bird feeders to share with our feathered friends!

10/7: Let's Bee Friends:
This class teaches about the importance of bees.  Kids will learn about pollination through an interactive game.  We will also identify types of bees, talk about bee jobs (and how they compare to people jobs), and learn about the bee life cycle.  A hands-on honey comb game will teach about honey and how bees collect nectar.  The pollinator friendly garden will be visited and discussed. Children will come up with ideas of how to help bees at home. Mason bee houses will be crafted from repurposed cartons (the significance of which will be explained) that the children can take home to hang in their gardens.  Children will be given seeds of pollinator friendly flowers to plant at home.
