He was a man before his time who developed and tirelessly promoted a vision of diverse tree-based agricultural systems right here in Pennsylvania. Discover more about this pioneer during an evening virtual meeting with longtime friend of the Horn Farm Center, Dale Hendricks of Green Light Plants.

A virtual presentation and community conversation.

“.. it is more important to save this country by growing trees and preserving the soil, than it is to try to save it by sending men to war.” - John Hershey's ‘Nature’s Orbits’ (a self-published book he wrote 1964)

Dale will talk about John Hershey, a devout Quaker, who had a vision of fertile and diverse farms that protected soils and water.  From 1921 to 1967 he grew and selected superior trees for higher nutritive value and long season productivity to benefit both humans and animals. When he died, his Downingtown farms and nursery were developed and largely forgotten. Dale and others are working to preserve and propagate the many remaining trees because of their improved genetics.
