On Wednesday\, September 9th from 6pm to 7:30pm\, we're seeking voluntee rs to help us tend a 12-acre riparian buffer. Hands on the land are critical as we protect water and build back biodiversity on retired farml and without the use of herbicides or large machine s. Join us to learn about agroforestry\, land rest oration\, and the local watershed while helping en sure a thriving educational ecosystem for the futu re.
\n \nDepending on the season\, weather\ , available materials\, and number of volunteers\, each r iparian buffer workday entails one or more of the following tasks:

\n \n PICTURED: Live stake rows in the riparian buffer. Live stakes are one e lement that make the Horn Farm's buffer multif unctional. While plants like willow (Sali x spp.)\, dogwood (Cornus spp.)\, vi burnum (Viburnum spp.) and other shrubs s upport the health of this streamside ecosystem\, w oody cuttings can be harvested each winter for pro pagation and planting elsewhere--an activity known as live staking. Bringing agriculture an d ecosystem restoration together\, live staking is one example of agroforestry.
\n \nPl ease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, dress for th e weather\, and bring your own water bottle (refil ls will be available). We have gloves on hand for those who need them\, though we encourage particip ants to bring their own gloves. All tools will be provided.
\n \nThis workday will require minor physical labor including stooping\, pulling\, shoveling\, and spending time outside in potentially rainy\, h ot\, or cold conditions. Be prepared for walking o n uneven\, possibly muddy terrain.
