 n Farm has planted hundreds of American hazelnuts 
 (<em>Corylus americana</em>) to demonstrate agrofo
 restry for our community. </h1>\n \n <p>These haze
 lnuts bring ecological benefits while preserving a
 gricultural value on the land. Naturally found in 
 wetlands and along streams\, they're a key crop in
  the Horn Farm's <a href="https://hornfarmcenter.o
 rg/for-the-whole-stream-1/">multifunctional ripari
 an buffer</a>\, where they help stablize soil\, ab
 sorb excess water\, and provide habitat for benefi
 cial insects and birds. While smaller than the wid
 ely-grown European hazelnut (<em>Corylus avellana-
 -</em>the nut behind Nutella)\, American hazelnuts
  are blight-resistant and better adapted to our re
 gion's frigid winters. The Horn Farm is currently 
 collaborating with the <a href="https://ktcc.coop/
 ">Keystone Tree Crops Cooperative</a> to explore A
 merican hazelnut's potential as a value-added nut 
 product\, like cooking oil and gluten-free flour. 
 </p>\n \n <p>On <strong>Saturday\, October 3rd fro
 m 10am to 12pm</strong>\, we're seeking volunteers
  to help us harvest  American hazelnuts. Depending
  on the number of volunteers and progress from pre
 vious workdays\, tasks may include:</p>\n \n <ul>\
 n 	<li>Gathering ripe hazelnut clusters in buckets
 .</li>\n 	<li>Separating nuts from dried outer hus
 ks. </li>\n 	<li>Removing encroaching plants to ad
 d space to the growing beds. </li>\n </ul>\n \n <p
 >Join us to learn about agroforestry\, land restor
 ation\, and the local watershed while helping us e
 nsure a thriving educational ecosystem at the Horn

 ts cannot be eaten directly from the tree\; they n
 eed to be cracked to remove the hard outer shell a
 nd retrieve the tender\, edible nutmeat inside. </

  \n <p>Please wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, dre
 ss for the weather\, and bring your own water bott
 le (refills will be available). We have gloves on 
 hand for those who want them. All tools will be pr

 n \n <p>This workday will require minor physical l
 abor including stooping\, carrying five-gallon buc
 kets\, and using manual hand pruners in potentiall
 y rainy\, hot\, or cold conditions. Be prepared fo
 r walking on uneven\, possibly muddy terrain.</p>\
