On Monday, March 18th in the evening, we're seeking volunteers to help us tend our newly-planted 10-acre riparian buffer. Hands on the land are critical as we protect water and build back biodiversity on retired farmland without the use of herbicides or large machines. Join us to learn about agroforestry, land restoration, and our watershed while helping us ensure a thriving ecosystem for the future.
This volunteer event begins at 5:00pm, but you are welcome to arrive whenever your schedule allows. Please note that if you arrive late, volunteers will already be at work in the buffer and may not be readily visible from the parking area. The volunteer leader's number will be posted at the barn if you cannot find the crew. Unless otherwise decided, work will continue until sundown.
During our Spring 2024 riparian buffer workdays, volunteers will help us plant new tree saplings, check and right tree tubes, manage introduced species, and fortify tree tube bases with rocks to prevent vole damage. Special activities may include live staking and planting native ground-layer plants.
These riparian buffer workdays are recurring on Monday evenings beginning March 18th and Sunday mornings (10am-12pm) beginning in April. Sign up for the days that work for you: hornfarmcenter.org/tree-planting/
What to bring:
Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills will be available). We have gloves on hand for those who need them, though we encourage participants to bring their own gloves. All tools will be provided.
Currently, we only have one regularly-cleaned porta-potty on the property due to the 2021 farmhouse fire, so please plan accordingly.
Physical Activity Note:
This workday will require minor physical labor including stooping, pulling, shoveling, and spending time outside in potentially cold conditions. Be prepared for walking on uneven, possibly muddy terrain.
All Volunteers:
Please read our Volunteer Waiver and Media Release Form before your arrival. When registering for this and other volunteer events, you will acknowledge receipt of this waiver and agree to the terms. You can reach us at education@hornfarmcenter.org with any questions or concerns.
