Partake in our Annual Coppice!
Taking place from 1PM to 4PM.
As we establish deeper roots through perennial agriculture and agroforestry, the Horn Farm Center has planted hundreds of willow shrubs in our demonstration field. Each year during dormancy, these willows can be "coppiced," or cut down to stump level, providing thousands of long, flexible branches with a variety of functions. Branches can be selected and sorted for basketry and other weaving crafts, or they can be bundled and used across the landscape for erosion mitigation and biochar production. From providing locally-based goods to restoring the land, willows contribute to our regenerative vision.

Volunteer tasks will vary depending on attendance and progress in previous workdays.
Tasks can include:
- Pruning willow branches with pruners and loppers (down to stump level),
- Sorting harvested branches by height and thickness,
- Bundling and tagging prepared branches,
- Carrying branches and bundles.
Horn Farm's staff will lead this workday and provide guidance. No prior experience required!
What to bring:
Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills are available). Participants may use their own work gloves, though we do have gloves on hand for those who need them. All tools will be provided.
Currently, we have two regularly-checked porta-potties on site due to the 2021 house fire, so please plan accordingly.
Physical activity note:
This workday will require moderate physical labor including bending, carrying, repetitive hand motions using manual pruners and loppers, and spending time outside in cold temperatures.
