Riparian Buffer Tree Tending: November 17th

Registration is closed for this event
Help the Horn Farm Center manage our 12-acre riparian buffer while learning about perennial plants, ecology, and ways to restore local waterways.

On Sunday, November 17th from 1pm to 3pm, we're seeking volunteers to help us tend our 12-acre riparian buffer. This workday will include harvesting live stakes: cuttings from trees and shrubs that are capable of producing new roots when planted elsewhere. Depending on the progress of the live stake harvest, workday tasks may also include pruning plants, spreading compost, and monitoring previous plantings for winter readiness.

Hands on the land are critical as we protect water and build back biodiversity on retired farmland without the use of herbicides or large machines. Join us to learn about agroforestry, land restoration, and our watershed while helping us ensure a thriving ecosystem for the future.

What to bring:

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills will be available). We have gloves on hand for those who need them, though we encourage participants to bring their own gloves. All tools will be provided.

Currently, we only have one regularly-cleaned porta-potty on the property due to the 2021 farmhouse fire, so please plan accordingly.

Physical Activity Note:

This workday will require minor physical labor including stooping, pulling, shoveling, and spending time outside in potentially hot conditions. Be prepared for walking on uneven, possibly muddy terrain.

All Volunteers:

Please read our Volunteer Waiver and Release Form before your arrival. You will be prompted to acknowledge receipt of this form when you register for the workday. You can reach us at education@hornfarmcenter.org with any questions or concerns.
