Riparian Buffer Tree Tending: Elderberry Workday

Registration is closed for this event
Help the Horn Farm Center manage our riparian buffer areas while learning about perennial plants, ecology, and ways to restore local waterways.

On Wednesday, March 12th from 5pm to 7pm, we're seeking volunteers for a special workday to help us tend the American black elderberries (Sambucus canadensis) that serve as part of our multifunctional riparian buffer. These plants are multifunctional because they fulfill important ecological roles--like stabilizing soil and providing habitat--while yielding a harvestable product of medicinal fruits each summer.

As part of our winter maintenance activities, we will be mulching the understory and pruning overgrown plants to encourage more robust berry production in the coming year. Our work will also make for an easier harvest in August and September. Time allowing, we may set aside suitable cuttings that can be used for live staking, or propagation from stem cuttings. Live stakes can be cut from a tree or shrub and planted (or "staked") elsewhere to form a new plant--a characteristic of many wetland-adapted species like elderberries.

Whether you're curious about elderberries, want to learn more about agroforestry and land restoration, or are simply seeking an active day out on the land, join us in helping ensure a thriving and abundant ecosystem at the Horn Farm!

What to bring:

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle. We have gloves on hand for those who need them, though we encourage participants to bring their own gloves. All tools will be provided.

Currently, we only have one regularly-cleaned porta-potty on the property due to the 2021 farmhouse fire, so please plan accordingly.

Physical Activity Note:

This workday will require minor physical labor including bending, pulling, and repetitive hand and arm motions using manual loppers and pruners. Be prepared for walking on uneven, possibly muddy or snowy terrain.

All Volunteers:

Please read our Volunteer Waiver and Release Form before your arrival. You will be prompted to acknowledge receipt of this form when you register for the workday. You can reach us at education@hornfarmcenter.org with any questions or concerns.
