Connect with nature through the art of plant printing.
The beautiful, often surprising results of handmade plant prints are satisfying to the eye,
easy and enjoyable to create, and provide a fun, tactile way to hone our botany and
plant ID skills by working closely with the flora around us. In addition to plant arts like dyeing and fiber-making, printing with plants reveals the scope of inspiration that comes from the natural world.
Using simple materials like crayons, watercolor, ink pads, and collected plant materials, you’ll learn ways to creatively record and preserve the details of plants from the wild to your garden. In doing so, you'll get to create your own take-home pieces to keep or share as gifts with friends and family!
Aside from making the prints, we will discuss how to prepare plants to print and what makes a good plant to print from. We’ll also demonstrate how to turn plant prints into functional items such as bookmarks, note cards, or or how to incorporate plant printing into a nature journal.
Absolutely no experience is necessary to join this fun and exploratory class! From artists looking to expand their mediums to outdoor enthusiasts seeking to connect in new ways, to couples, friends, and family looking for a unique and collaborative outing, there’s something for everyone in creating art from nature!
All artwork created by the instructor, Diane Podolsky. Two titled pieces shown above: Assumptions (top) and Diary of a Vegetable Farmer (bottom).

About the Instructor: Diane Podolsky
Pennsylvania artist Diane Podolsky has focused a large part of her art career studying the natural world. Being from Philadelphia, her focus was originally urban ecology but then shifted to agriculture and general conservation concerns upon relocating to North Carolina. Shortly before moving South, Diane completed the Master Gardeners Program through Penn State Extension and worked for a season as a gardener at the historic Glen Foerd Museum. Upon moving to North Carolina, Diane joined Central Carolina Master Naturalists and took a job on a small commercial farm, tending several acres and a large greenhouse, while also volunteering with a local Herbarium. Eventually, Diane was hired at the Herbarium to mount a large collection of plants and also was part of the team that managed the day to day operations of the herbarium. Her main mediums are printmaking, drawing, and artist books. She has exhibited extensively and her work is in public and private collections in the US and abroad.
