Riparian Buffer Tree Tending: November 16, 2025

Registration is closed for this event
Help the Horn Farm Center manage our 12-acre riparian buffer while learning about perennial plants, ecology, and ways to restore local waterways.

On Sunday, November 16th from 10am to 12pm, we're seeking volunteers to help us tend our 12-acre riparian buffer. Hands on the land are critical as we protect water and build back biodiversity on retired farmland without the use of herbicides or large machines. Join us to learn about agroforestry, land restoration, and the local watershed while helping ensure a thriving educational ecosystem for the future.

Depending on the season, weather, available materials, and number of volunteers, each riparian buffer workday entails one or more of the following tasks:

  • Monitoring current plantings by checking and adjusting tree tubes, tracking mortality, and hand-clearing overgrowth.
  • Fortifying new plantings for winter by depositing rocks around trees to deter vole nesting.
  • Preparing beds for new live stake plantings by aerating soil and spreading leaf mulch.
  • Planting new tree and shrub saplings.
  • Harvesting agroforestry products like American hazelnuts (Corylus americana) in the early fall and live stakes in late winter.

PICTURED: Live stake rows in the riparian buffer. Live stakes are one element that make the Horn Farm's buffer multifunctional. While plants like willow (Salix spp.), dogwood (Cornus spp.), viburnum (Viburnum spp.) and other shrubs support the health of this streamside ecosystem, woody cuttings can be harvested each winter for propagation and planting elsewhere--an activity known as live staking. Bringing agriculture and ecosystem restoration together, live staking is one example of agroforestry

What to bring:

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills will be available). We have gloves on hand for those who need them, though we encourage participants to bring their own gloves. All tools will be provided.

As the restoration of our farmhouse and education center continues, we do not currently have indoor restroom accomodations. There is one regularly-cleaned porta-potty in the parking area. Please plan accordingly, and thank you for your flexibility!

Physical Activity Note:

This workday will require minor physical labor including stooping, pulling, shoveling, and spending time outside in potentially rainy, hot, or cold conditions. Be prepared for walking on uneven, possibly muddy terrain.

All Volunteers:

Please read our Volunteer Waiver and Release Form before your arrival. You will be prompted to acknowledge receipt of this form when you register for the workday. You can reach us at education@hornfarmcenter.org with any questions or concerns.
