Discover the art of cyanotype printmaking in this hands-on workshop at Horn Farm. Through a demonstration, guided instruction, and hands-on studio time, you'll learn the basics of this artistic process and create your own unique blue-and-white prints to take home.

The History & Process of Cyanotype

Class will begin with an introduction to cyanotype, one of the oldest photographic printing processes. Instructor Liz Kendig will share a brief history of this unique art form and explain how cyanotypes are created using sunlight and a light-sensitive solution made from two chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. Through a live demonstration, you'll learn how placing objects and negatives on paper can be used to create images, how exposure time affects contrast and color, and how the final rich blue print is revealed through a simple water rinse. No creative experience is required.

Material Gathering & Creative Inspiration 

After the demonstration, participants will have the opportunity to explore around the farm and gather materials for their prints. Enjoy an optional guided discovery walk through the pollinator meadow and collect leaves, flowers, and other natural materials from designated areas around the farm. You may also choose from a wide selection of dried plants and negatives from Liz's personal archive, including local topographic maps that add beautiful shapes and intricate patterns to your artwork. Participants are welcome, but not required, to bring small transparent objects, fabrics, or other materials from home to incorporate into their designs.

Create Your Own Cyanotype Prints

Put your new knowledge into practice during the hands-on printmaking session. Participants will have supervised time to experiment with cyanotype techniques, create original compositions, and receive guidance from Liz throughout the process. The number of prints is unlimited, and participants can expect to take home a minimum of four 4" x 6" ready-to-frame prints. 

Program Notes: 

What to Bring/Wear: All materials needed to create cyanotypes will be provided. Participants may bring personal items to use in their prints, but are responsible for any items they bring. While the workshop will be based in the Horn Farm learning center, portions of the process take place outdoors, so please wear clothing appropriate for prolonged sun exposure.

Arrival: Parking takes place in the field above the farmhouse. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early so we can begin each class on time. We'll begin this class by meeting in the farmhouse. 

Audience:  This program is primarily designed for adult engagement. Children over 12 may attend with an adult. 

Cost: The standard cost for this program is $40/person.

About the Instructor:

Liz Kendig

Liz Kendig is a printmaker and photographer who works at her home studio and farm in Manchester, Pennsylvania. Originally from Lancaster, her work is heavily influenced by the native landscape. Her site-specific work originated from her interest in local conservation efforts, and she takes her practice outdoors as a form of creative documentation of the landscape she’s in.

She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and currently exhibits her work and hosts classes locally. When she’s not in her studio, Liz can be found in her garden, at the beach, or enjoying time on the sofa with her partner and their retired racing greyhound, Obie.
