Willow Harvesting Workday: Monday, January 16th

Registration is closed for this event
The cold season is the ideal time to harvest willow rods for basketry, live stakes, fuel, and other uses. Spend a cool morning outside with us while helping us gather willow branch bundles and learning about agroforestry!

Tasks will vary depending on our progress and volunteer count.

These can include: pruning willow branches with hand pruners (down to stump level); sorting harvested branches by height and thickness; bundling and tagging prepared branches; and carrying branches and branch bundles. Horn Farm's staff will be leading this workday and providing guidance. More information on our willow field and tree coppicing can be found at hornfarmcenter.org/winter-willow-workdays/

What to bring:

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills will be available). Participants may use their own work gloves, though we do have gloves on hand for those who need them. Currently, we only have one regularly-checked porta-potty on site due to the 2021 house fire, so please plan accordingly.

New Volunteers: please read and sign our Volunteer Waiver and Release Form before your arrival. You can bring a printed, signed copy with you to the event or send a virtual copy to education@hornfarmcenter.org. Physical copies will also be available upon arrival.

Physical activity note:

This workday will require moderate physical labor including bending, carrying, repetitive hand motions using manual pruners, and spending time outside in cold temperatures.
