April 15th Riparian Buffer Tree Planting

Registration is closed for this event
Help the Horn Farm Center add two acres to our riparian buffer while learning about perennial plants, ecology, and ways to restore local waterways.

To learn more about the Horn Farm's riparian buffer plantings and the importance of riparian areas in PA, visit the February 2023 installment of the Horn Farm Center's blog: For the Whole Stream: Riparian Buffers.

On Saturday, April 15th from 10am to 12pm, we're seeking volunteers to help us plant hundreds of trees in two new acres that we've recently added to our multifunctional riparian buffer. We're reclaiming and rewilding formerly-farmed streamside areas to protect our waterways, regenerate habitat, and heal the land.

The warming days of Spring provide favorable conditions for new trees to establish their root systems and synethesize the energy needed to grow. Volunteers will help us plant and stake tree saplings, manage invasives, and install protective tree tubes to help our saplings succeed.

What to bring:

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills will be available). We have gloves on hand for those who need them, though we ask that participants bring their own gloves. Currently, we only have one regularly-cleaned porta-potty on the property due to the 2021 house fire, so please plan accordingly.

Physical Activity Note:

This workday will require minor physical labor including stooping, bending, carrying, hammering, and spending time outisde in potentially cold conditions.

New Volunteers:

Please read and sign our Volunteer Waiver and Release Form before your arrival. You can bring a printed, signed copy with you to the event or send a virtual copy to education@hornfarmcenter.org. Physical copies will also be available upon arrival.
