Sweet Potatoes 101

Registration is closed for this event

Sweet Potatoes are considered one of the easier crops to grow. With that being said, if it was that easy everyone would do it! At the Horn Farm we have found a few techniques that increase the likelihood of large, tasty tubers. Each year we grow around 400 plants and disperse the bounty to our CSA members.

If you’ve never grown sweet potatoes before, this class will provide hands-on experience to see how we grow them on a CSA scale at the farm. If you have grown them before but would like to observe our growing methods at the Horn Farm, then this class is also for you!

We’ll cover: ground preparation and bed formation, irrigation, weed and pest management, harvesting, curing, storing and preparing, starting your own slips vs buying them.

All participants will have the opportunity to assist in one of the most important aspect of growing sweet potatoes: the ground prep and bed formation.  Additionally, a handful (10-15) of slips (baby sweet potato plants) will be available for pickup for each participant that wishes to take them home to plant in their garden.

About the Instructor:

Born in York County, Andrew earned his Business Management degree from Shippensburg University. After graduation, Andrew traveled with World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) to New Zealand, where he lived and learned on organic farms. Captivated by his experience, Andrew wanted to continue his journey in small-scale agriculture and sought to find a place where he could apply, develop and learn new skills. He found the Horn Farm Center through an Introduction to Permaculture class.

Since successful completion of the Farming Internship, Andrew has pursued his  career in farming as the Farm Manager at the Horn Farm Center. He runs the Horn Farm Plant Sale & Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, manages the Community Gardens, and guides participants through hands-on instruction in the Land Steward Training Program.
