Bring local, seasonal Ayurvedic cooking from the garden to your kitchen wth these four unique sessions - designed to be taken together as a comprehensive course but available to register for individual classes.

Ayurveda is an ancient form of healing developed in India and has been practiced for more than 5,000 years.  It is a system of daily living which promotes physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

In Ayurveda, the five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) are present in each individual but the proportions and combinations vary from person to person. When these elements are in balance, the result is good health. When these elements are out of balance, the result is illness or disease.  Ayurveda treats the whole individual, not the illness or disease in isolation.

Ayurveda states that individual’s relationship with food is essential for good health. In order to prepare meals that optimize our health we need to take into consideration the following:

  1. Eat seasonally: nature provides the ideal harvest for each season to keep us heath, energized and focused. Ayurveda believes that we benefit enormously from adjusting our lifestyles and diet according to the changing seasons.

  2. A balanced meal should incorporate the 6 tastes: In the Ayurvedic tradition, food speaks to us through tastes and the proper combination of these tastes promotes health and well-being. The combination of these tastes naturally guides us towards our body’s nutritional needs and helps us to avoid food cravings and the over-consumption of certain types of foods.

  3. Make your meals simple, using minimal ingredients in order to digest the food properly.

In these classes, you will learn how to cook seasonally, how to use the six tastes in your daily cooking and how to make simple, but tasty and satisfying meals.

All recipes are vegetarian, gluten and lactose free. Even though Ayurveda originates from India, this is not an Indian cooking class.

Because the classes focus on seasonal cooking, they are designed to be taken together as a comprehensive course. While it is possible to register for single classes, please note that overall introduction to Ayurveda is offered only during the first class.

About the instructor:

This course is being led by Samia Abreu. Through Samia’s yoga teacher training, she was introduced to Ayurveda - the sister science to Yoga. Samia quickly realized that Ayurveda could be helpful in treating symptoms she had been experiencing due to the physical and emotional challenges of relocating from Brazil to the US in 2011.  The practice and teaching of yoga and the introduction of an Ayurvedic lifestyle changed Samia’s quality of life for the better. This experience led Samia to pursue her certification as an Ayurvedic yoga specialist. Samia offers private Ayurvedic life-style consultations and has been focusing her continuing education on Ayurvedic cooking. She incorporates ayurvedic cooking into her daily life, so she is truly living what she teaches.
