Horn Farm Happenings – April 26, 2019

Engaging regularly with the natural world is especially important for the development of healthy children. There are well-documented psychological, physical, and mental benefits of playing outdoors, especially in wild spaces. We have a farm and wild spaces and we’d like to share them with you and your children!

Our Children’s Discovery Series for kids age 6 to 12 starts this Sunday with Nature Exploration. Come on a short hiking exploration to observe, hear, and feel the natural environment and sense that we are a part of nature! Play an investigative game of what things in our environment might be trying to tell us.  We will talk about the interconnected web of life, the trees, water, bugs, wildlife, and sunlight and the importance of all of these elements to life (including ours). We will also get our hands in the dirt for some planting, gaining an understanding of how nature can support us and doing our best to provide a life-sustaining environment for the plants.

On May 5, join us for Little Footprints.  What does it mean to leave no trace and why is it even important?  Examine what seemingly small things in our environment could actually be full habitats and how we can interact with them in a non-disruptive way.  We will be picking up some muddy rocks and sifting through some dirt for this one, please dress appropriately. We will also look for bugs and worms in the garden and discuss how things that sometimes seem yucky can actually be important to sustaining life.

On May 19 we’ll be investigating the Healing Power of Plants. Explore the healing powers of plants: trees, flowers, and more!  Be prepared, you might be asked to hug a tree! Children will be encouraged to experience the vibrational energy of the flowers that grow on Horn Farm in a variety of colors and shapes!  A game will be played to illustrate how this energy affects us and how we can share it with one another as we interact! We will also explore the healing nature of herbs and even create an herbal salve based on what is available at the time.  We take care to harvest all herbs in a way that is life-sustaining to the plant and children leave with the understanding that we can use these natural resources without depleting them.

On May 26 we will be exploring where our food comes from–and it’s not the grocery store! Seed to Table Come harvest and prepare some yummy and nutritional snacks for yourself!  Kimber will use her skills as a former Executive Chef to guide kids through the preparation of a snack they will enjoy!  All ingredients will be harvested in a way that is careful not to harm the plant, and we will talk about how nurturing the plants comes back to us.  Kids will also get to plant some herbal seeds of their own to take home.

What is an apothecary? Traditionally an apothecary was the person who prepared medicines. That role has, in large part, been supplanted by the pharmacist. Apothecary comes from the Greek word apothēkē which means storehouse. You might think of your medicine cabinet and what you keep there as a modern day apothecary. Since we know that food can be medicine, you might also think of what’s in your kitchen cupboards as part of your apothecary. Many prescription medicines are derived from plants. The knowledge of plants and their medicinal uses has largely been lost to we moderns, but it can be regained. The Horn Farm Herbal Intensive course is an invitation to do just that. It is an invitation to re-enter the world of plants and their medicinal uses, to regain the knowledge that was once shared by everyone and hopefully one day will be again.

If you’d love to fill your medicine cabinet and kitchen cupboards with plant based medicines, check out the Build Your Own Apothecary CSA Share offered by Sentient Sisterhood. If you are interested, sign up soon as registration ends May 13!

Horn Farm Happenings – April 19, 2019

Where does the time go?! It’s hard to believe that the first CSA pick up date is just over six weeks away. In the CSA (community supported agriculture) model, members pay the farmer up front for a share of the harvest during the growing season. This allows the farmer to pay for tools, seed, and feed at the beginning of the season when expenses are high and income is low.

It’s been a dream of ours to connect other small farms to you–our community. This year we are delighted that the Horn Farm will be a pick up location for five other local farms! You can get your vegetables through the Horn Farm Vegetable CSA. Whether or not you are a vegetable CSA share holder,  you can get meat, eggs, mushrooms, flowers, and wild foods & medicines delivered to the Horn Farm.  This season we are a pick up location for these other local farms:Betsy's Flower Farm Betsy’s Flowers at the Farm (cut flowers),

oyster mushrooms Hippy Homestead (gourmet mushrooms),

cute cattle at water trough Rising Locust Farm. (beef, pork, eggs, shiitake mushrooms),

Mirror Image Farms (chicken),

and, we are pleased to announce that Sentient Sisterhood (wild foods & medicines) has added the Horn Farm as a pick up location. Contact these farms directly for more information!

On Saturday, June 22, The Cycle Works of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania and 7group will be co-hosting the fifth annual Cycle the Solstice bicycle ride to benefit the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education.cycle the solstice riders en route Cycle the Solstice is a fun 30 or 62 mile bike ride through York and Lancaster counties. The ride will offer cycling opportunities in the beautiful Susquehanna River watershed while providing information about leading healthy lifestyles and supporting ecologically sustainable local food production in the region.

Each ride will begin at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. Riders will use road blazes and cue sheets to ride their chosen loop at their own pace. Along the way, riders will stop at local small farm businesses and markets for refreshments. Upon completion of their loop, riders will return to the farm to enjoy a lunch made with fresh, local ingredients and, if desired, to tour the farm to see all of the exciting regenerative practices taking place at the farm. Horn Farm Happenings – April 12, 2019

What if everything you needed to improve or maintain your physical and emotional health could be found in your own backyard? Well, it can! Let us show you how to grow and harvest medicinal herbs and how to make plant medicine.

Plants and humans have always had a close relationship. Until recently, humans relied on plants for food, medicine, shelter, and much more. Many of us have forgotten what the plant world has to teach and to offer us. Luckily the plants are all around us, just waiting to be discovered again. The Horn Farm Herbal Intensive is an opportunity to do just that. This is your invitation to re-enter the world of plants, to rediscover their medicinal uses, and to regain the knowledge that was once shared by everyone and hopefully will be again.

During the course of the Herbal Intensive, participants will spend one weekend each month to learn a hands on approach to herbalism. With a focus on doing and creating, students will participate in all aspects of plant use and medicine making, including gardening and growing the plants we will be using, foraging for wild varieties, understanding the body systems, plant families, and how they interact, plant preparation, medicine making, and medicine usage. Find out more!

The gardening season has begun! The Community Gardens are open, and we still have space for you! The popular Community Garden program at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education offers soil lovers and aspiring farmers the opportunity to grow fresh, chemical-free food on prime farmland in the company of other enthusiastic and dedicated gardeners. Each plot measures 20 x 20 feet. Seasonal garden plots are open from mid-April, weather permitting, until the end of October. Seasonal plot registration can be found here. Horn Farm offers a limited number of year-round plots for more serious gardeners who wish to manage and tend their plot through all four seasons. (Contact us for details on year-round plots).
