Kevin Alvarnaz – Our Healthcare Specialist

Kevin Alvarnaz was born on August 24, 1970 in Boston, MA, and lived his first 18 years just south of Boston in Raynham, MA. He graduated from Messiah College in 1992 with a B.S. in Biology and the goal of becoming a physical therapist. It was at Messiah that he met his wife, Carol.

Kevin served as a paramedic in Harrisburg and Hanover for 10 years and then studied at York College where in 2004 he obtained his M.B.A. in Healthcare Management. He also transitioned to program manager roles in the PA Dept. of Health’s tobacco cessation and cardiovascular health/obesity prevention programs. In 2006 ,he accepted his current position as Director of Community Health & Wellness at WellSpan Health.

Including other responsibilities, he is accountable for stressing the importance of living a healthier life; encouraging workplace wellness, supporting access to healthcare for diverse populations, and improving the physical, mental and economic health of the community.

To help accomplish this, Wellspan Health created a Food Availability Task Force in 2008 to determine how to improve access to and the affordability of local foods, primarily among under-served community members. This Task Force is now the York County Food Alliance, of which  Horn Farm Center is an integral partner.

Besides his involvement with the Task Force, for the last two years, Kevin, Carol and their two daughters, Hannah and Lydia, managed an HFC community garden plot and learned the hands-on value of planting, harvesting, and consuming locally grown vegetables. They currently reside in Mount Wolf, PA.

Kevin is also a member of the YMCA Board of Directors, a leader in his church, and, with his wife and daughters, actively involved in productions at DreamWrights Youth & Family Theatre. In 2013 he became a Board Member of  Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, and we continue benefit greatly from the energy and ideas of this multi-faceted person!
