Guided Hike: Buzzard’s Roost & Wildcat Run

MODERATELY DIFFICULT 4-MILE LOOP. Start your morning right with a Wild & Uncommon adventure through the Hellam Hills. Enjoy the fall ecology of fields and forests as you hike to Buzzards Roost to explore the geology of this incredible overlook. Then descend the dramatic cliffs that define Buzzards Roost to a final loop around Wildcat Run.

YOUTH PROGRAM: Weird Fish & Fishing Weirs

Suitable for ages 5-12. Create a fish print and learn about the wild fish of the Susquehanna. Learn about how Native Americans caught fish and how fishing weirs were used.


Guided Hike: Ecological Restoration at Wizard Ranch

MODERATE 2 MILE HIKE. Explore the natural history and restoration work in progress that will create native forests, savannahs and meadows at this unique nature preserve, located just five minutes from the Horn Farm Center!

Guided Hike: Wild Pawpaws & Zebra Swallowtails at Turkey Hill

MODERATELY DIFFICULT 3-MILE HIKE. Hike along the Turkey Hill Trail and spy wild fruiting pawpaw trees and its beautiful companion, the zebra swallowtail. This guided hike will explore the unique relationship between these two species and we will discover many other plants, insects, and birds along the way to a scenic river overlook.

Looking to extend your pawpaw experience? Stop into the beautiful Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in Columbia, PA to purchase leftover pawpaw fruit while supplies last! Unless we sell out during the pawpaw festival, cultivated fruit and pawpaw merchandise will be for sale thanks to The Gardener of the Owl Valley. During your visit, enjoy sweeping views of the Lower Susquehanna River and check out the other recreational opportunities that the riverfront has to offer, including the Northwest River Trail. The space for this event is generously provided by the Susquehanna National Heritage Area.
