arm for an adventure into herpetology -the scienti
fic study of reptiles and amphibians. Venture into
the woods as we go "herping" - an exciting outdoo
r exploration to sight these scaly and slimy creat
ures. You'll be turning over fallen logs\, looking
under rocks\, and sticking your hands in the mud
to uncover some of nature's most fascinating creat
ures. In the fall\, Eastern redback and marbled sa
lamanders come out to breed in the fall\, so we ma
y also glimpse them around the farm during our cra
wl! </p>\n \n <p>Class will begin with a short pre
sentation on safety protocols\, ethical handling p
ractices\, a background on these amphibians and th
eir habitats\, and local salamander ID techniques.
Then\, we will embark on a “critter crawl” around
Horn Farm\, where we'll venture off paths and int
o wet or muddy areas to discover elusive salamande
rs.</p>\n \n <p>The class is scheduled to optimize
the likelihood of engaging encounters\, however\,
spotting salamanders is not guaranteed. Because h
erps are moving\, living creatures\, the success o
f our excursion may vary depending on weather cond
 itions\, seasonal variations\, location\, time\, a
nd pure luck. Despite this\, the dynamic nature of
wildlife ensures that there will always be intere
sting things (outside of reptiles and amphibians)
to discover under logs and rocks\, in creeks and v
ernal pools\, and the rich tapestry of biodiversit
y at the farm will be sure to spark informative co
nversation regardless of what creatures we encount
er.</p>\n \n <p>We invite participants of all ages
to join us on our herping adventure – from young
tadpoles to old tortoises. We do ask\, however\, t
hat children under 12 be accompanied by an adult a
nd suggest that children under 3 may not be well s
 uited for these activities.</p>\n \n <p>Come equip
ped with a spirit of inquiry\, a respect for the s
mall\, and a willingness to get your hands dirty\,
and you might be surprised at the multitude of li
fe you can find right under your feet. We recommen
