15,000 Trees & Counting!

In the past four years, we have planted over 15,000 trees at the Horn Farm Center! We couldn’t have done it without Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership and their Ten Million Trees for PA initiative.

The Horn Farm Center is part of the watershed that feeds the Susquehanna River, one of the three oldest rivers in the world. Our work as land stewards not only affects the ecosystem that the Horn Farm exists within, but also the health of the river, and the Chesapeake Bay.

In 2018, we began the work of transitioning several acres of farmland into multi-functional riparian buffer landscapes. By planting over 17,000 trees on the Horn Farm by the end of 2022, our goal is to produce food and agroforestry products while protecting the health of our waterways, from the Kreutz Creek, to the Susquehanna and beyond.

We knew we had our work cut out for us. But what we didn’t know, and what we discovered, was that we had a whole community waiting to help us through the K10 Partnership. The materials, trees, resources, and community support have been incredible and the impact has been significant. Thanks to K10 we will be able to meet and exceed our goals!

We are so close! Our final tree plantings will be held next spring 2023. 

A special thanks to the hundreds of dedicated volunteers, who planted trees in sun, rain, wind, and SNOW, including our friends at the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, York College of Pennsylvania, YCSCT Enviro Club, Watershed Alliance of York PA, York Penn State Master Watershed Stewards, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, Hellam Township EAC, GIANT employees, Keep York Beautiful, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, The Stone Independent School, and several other volunteer groups. We are so thankful for their hard work, enthusiasm, and generous spirit.

In addition to support from K10 Partnership, this work is funded by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PennVest; Mid-Atlantic Media Hub Fund of York County Community Foundation; and The GIANT Company and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Healing the Planet grant program.  

Together we are beautifying our community, reducing the impacts of climate change, and protecting York County’s waterways!

Ride to Support Horn Farm Center

Join us on Saturday, June 18, 2022 for Cycle the Solstice, hosted by The Cycle Works of Wrightsville to benefit the Horn Farm Center.

Cycle the Solstice is a 30- or 62-mile bike ride through York and Lancaster counties that showcases the beauty and the bounty of the Susquehanna river valley. Riders will depart from the Horn Farm Center in the morning, riding their chosen loop at their own pace. Along the way, riders will stop at local small business farms and markets for refreshments produced at the farms and other local food and agriculture businesses.

Upon completion of the ride, participants will enjoy a catered lunch and musical entertainment by Bend the Rails, a soulful blend of gutsy folk, blues, and country music.

A limited number of lunch tickets are available for those who prefer not to ride but want to enjoy the celebrations at the Horn Farm. Lunch tickets are $15/person and can be purchased on the registration page below.

The Horn Farm CSA runs 20 weeks from June through October. Each week offers seasonal, organically-grown produce. Here’s what you can expect:

• Spring: lettuces, spinach, kale, swiss chard, spring onions, beets, herbs
• Summer: kale, swiss chard, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, beets, summer squash, watermelon, cataloupe, onions, herbs, and more!
• Fall: garlic, beets, turnips, winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, swiss chard, spinach

Pick-ups are at the Farm Stand located at 4945 Horn Road on Wednesdays from 2:30-6:30pm.

We Did It Together

Last Friday, we shared our goals to Transform Horn Farm as part of Give Local York. Throughout the day, we revealed our new strategic vision and you responded with overwhelming support!

In just 24 hours, 181 of our friends and supporters raised $27,896.00 to help us acheive our goals.

THANK YOU! We are humbled by the generosity of our community, the backbone of our work. A special thanks to 7group and a Horn Farm Center board member, who sponsored our efforts to raise $25,000 with two $5,000 matches.

7group’s contribution will help us rebuild the farmhouse, while our board member match will go towards solar panels, supporting our new initiative to become completely carbon neutral by 2028. This is just one of several new strategic goals.

Following a year-long planning process and the devastating farmhouse fire in 2021, we are moving boldly towards a new direction. Our goals are ambitious, especially as we navigate the challenges of rebuilding. But we know that, together with your support, we can accomplish all of these goals and more.

Betsy’s Flowers: CSA Shares Now Available!

Organically-Grown Cut Flower Bouquets
6-week Shares with 2 “Artisan Add-Ons”
4 Pick-up Locations: York, Harrisburg, Camp Hill and Hampden Twp.

Betsy’s Flowers Bouquets will once again be offered on a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) platform, much the same as a vegetable CSA, but instead of vegetables you will receive flowers.

Buying a “share” upfront helps us to buy our seeds and supplies. In return, you will receive 6 weeks of organically grown, fresh cut flower bouquets along with a Victorian “Language of Flowers” interpretation of your bouquet. A few of the flowers we’re growing are: Sunflowers, Zinnias, Lavender, Cosmos, Snapdragons, and a variety of perennials.

This Season you will also receive two “Artisan Add-Ons”. Each share will receive one of Laura Desautels’ (Betsy’s fellow flower grower) custom homemade botanical soaps and a set of 4 nature inspired notecards by Cape Cod artist, Kathy Meyers, during the 6-week period.

Your bouquet will arrive in a Kraft paper sleeve, all ready for your favorite vase or jar!

There are four pick-up locations:

• Horn Farm Center – Wednesday from 2:30 – 6:30 pm
• 2134 North Second Street, Harrisburg (Formerly TMC Wellness through Movement) – Friday from 3:00– 6:30 pm
• You’Topia Salon, 15 N. 21st Street, Camp Hill – Wednesday from 3:00 – 6:30 pm
• Healthy You Cafe, Hampden Market Place, Enola – Friday from 2:30 – 4:00 pm

Weather permitting the first CSA will run from:

• Wednesdays 6/1 – 7/6/22
• Fridays 6/3 – 7/9/22

The work that we do at the Horn Farm Center is transformative. Not just on the land, but in the minds and hearts of the people we serve. In the next 3 years, we will train over 150 new Land Stewards, equipping them with the skills that they need to bring healing and transformation to their own backyards and communities.

Training 150 land stewards is just one of several new strategic goals.

Following a year-long planning process and the devastating farmhouse fire in 2021, we are moving boldly towards a new vision for the organization. With our new vision, we will:

• Grow and diversify the Horn Farm Center team 
• Improve and expand facilities, building as sustainably as possible
• Transition to perennial agroforestry systems inclusive of animals
• Become completely carbon neutral by 2028
• Train 150 new land stewards by 2025 
• Cultivate a regenerative community of learners and practitioners 
• Become a bio-regional destination for transformative experiences, ecological learning, and earth-focused skill-building
• Expand our reach by 25% by 2024, establishing a unique brand, educational content, and communications plan
• Foster an organizational culture rooted in relationships and values
• Create regenerative organizational systems and increase capacity to support the organization’s growth and transformation

Our goals are ambitious, especially as we navigate the challenges of rebuilding. But we know that, together with your support, we can accomplish all of these goals and more.
