November 5th Riparian Buffer Tree Tending

On Sunday, November 5th from 9:00am to 11:00am, we're seeking volunteers to help us winterize hundreds of trees across our budding riparian buffer. This yearly maintenance work is critical in helping us reclaim formerly-farmed streamside areas for the revitalization of soil, water, and local habitat.  

As the young trees that dot our landscape settle into their winter dormancy, now is the time to ensure they're protected and primed for the challenges of the cold-season. Volunteers will help us check and right tree tubes, manage invasives, plant last-minute saplings, and fortify tree bases with rocks to prevent vole damage during the winter. 

What to bring:

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, dress for the weather, and bring your own water bottle (refills will be available). We have gloves on hand for those who need them, though we ask that participants bring their own gloves. Currently, we only have one regularly-cleaned porta-potty on the property due to the 2021 house fire, so please plan accordingly. 

Physical Activity Note:

This workday will require minor physical labor including stooping, bending, shoveling, and spending time outisde in cold conditions. Be prepared for walking on uneven terrain in potentially muddy conditions.

Please read our Volunteer Waiver and Release Form before your arrival. If you have not filled one out before, you can bring a printed, signed copy with you to the event or send a virtual copy to education@hornfarmcenter.org. Physical copies will also be available upon arrival.
