Earth Skills for Women: Intro to Wilderness Survival

A women's introduction to the essentials of wilderness survival: firemaking, shelter building, awareness, camouflage and water filtration.

This introductory course explores the foundations of wilderness survival through a blend of hands-on practice, demonstration, and discussion. Together, we will learn essential skills such as firemaking, shelter building, water filtration, camouflage, and nature awareness. No previous experience is necessary; just come spend a few hours with women who have a curiosity about the skills of survival and a desire to be closer to the earth. Designed as a foundational “jumping-off point,” this class introduces practical earth skills that can foster greater confidence and self-reliance. With every survival class you take, your dependence on man-made tools will decrease. The earth will provide if you learn the ancient and sacred skills of survival.

Participants may learn about:

  • Fire-starting techniques
  • Basic shelter-building concepts
  • Water filtration and purification methods, including creating a simple filter to take home
  • Camouflage and blending into the natural environment
  • Nature awareness and observation practices
  • Mindfulness and meditation techniques that deepen connection with the land
  • The philosophy of living with the earth and cultivating a reciprocal relationship with the natural world

This women-centered class offers a supportive environment to explore earth skills alongside others who share an appreciation for nature, self-reliance, and personal growth. Women have a special ability to connect to the earth, as her life-giving feminine power is embodied within us. The only thing separating us from the natural world is the belief that we are separate. This class, at its core, will begin the process of knocking down the illusory walls of belief that separate us from our Earth Mother.

About the Instructor:

Lauren Hertz

Lauren Hertz is a Lancaster native who has found her passion in learning the skills of survival, and believes that these skills, along with deepening the relationship with the earth, can heal the human spirit, and the earth. She discovered this newfound love for the primitive skills at The Tracker school in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. After taking basic, advanced survival and tracking classes along with taking a survival trip, she realized that she felt a responsibility to teach what she knows. She believes these skills are every human’s birthright, and should not be kept to herself, but should be shared with her fellow humans.
