Way to Go Golden Knights!

Students at Eastern York High School raised over $600 to help the Horn Farm Center.

Led and organized by the Eastern York National Honor Society (NHS), students held a change war along with canning at a Golden Knights basketball game. The NHS chose Horn Farm Center as the organization to benefit from the change wars because they wanted to help us recover and restore our farmhouse.

We are absolutely honored to accept this donation. And, we are INSPIRED by Eastern York High School students for their incredible generosity and leadership.

We hope that you are inspired too! You can make difference by donating to the Horn Farm Center and supporting our efforts to Transform Horn Farm, starting with Give Local York.

10th Annual Plant Sale on May 7th

Get your garden growing this spring by shopping at the Horn Farm Plant Sale on May 7, 2022 from 9:00AM-3:00PM.

The 10th Annual Plant Sale will be held at the Horn Farm and features a wide variety of organically-grown vegetable, herb, and flower starts for home gardening. Newly added this year are grasses, herbaceous perennials, vines, trees, and shrubs.

Unlike last year’s contact-less pick-up, customers can shop for their favorite garden plants on-site. While we are no longer offering online pre-sales, we have an online catalog available for those of you who enjoy planning your garden purchases ahead of time.

The sale features plants grown by the Horn Farm Center and our on-farm partners: Kilgore Family Farm, Betsy’s Flowers, Calyx Native Nursery, and Future Forest Plants. The event will also host local vendors: Ort Family Farm, Zari Herbal, Visual Design Arts, and more!

May 7th is a great day to pick up the plants you need for your garden. In addition to the Horn Farm Plant Sale, you can shop at the Penn State Master Gardener’s Native Plant Sale in Rudy Park.

The Horn Farm CSA runs 20 weeks from June through October. Each week offers seasonal, organically-grown produce. Here’s what you can expect:

• Spring: lettuces, spinach, kale, swiss chard, spring onions, beets, herbs
• Summer: kale, swiss chard, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, beets, summer squash, watermelon, cataloupe, onions, herbs, and more!
• Fall: garlic, beets, turnips, winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, swiss chard, spinach

Pick-ups are at the Farm Stand located at 4945 Horn Road on Wednesdays from 2:30-6:30pm.

What (or Who) is Miyawaki?

The Miyawaki Method is an incredibly effective technique for quickly transforming degraded landscapes into thriving forest ecosystems.  First originated in the 1950s by Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist, this planting method mimics natural forest ecosystems and has many benefits over more traditional approaches.

High biodiversity and density are key components of Miyawaki forests. In addition to intensive soil preparation, the process involves planting a wide variety of native species in close proximity. Trees planted using the Miyawaki Method grow very fast, jump starting the forest creation process and capturing more carbon.

In 2018, the Horn Farm Center began experimenting with the Miyawaki Method in a small demonstration plot on the farm. Using species native to our bio-region, our team established one of the first deciduous Miyawaki plantings in the United States. The project was designed and led by Woodland Steward, Wilson Alvarez.

We discovered that the trees and shrubs planted using the Miyawaki Method grew 8 to 10 times faster than those using traditional methods. Since the success of this first planting, we have utilized the Miyawaki Method for a number of tree plantings, including our multifuntional riparian buffer project.

In the past 4 years, our work has doubled the biodiversity on the farm and created new habitat for a multitude of bird and insect species. And, our original demonstration plot is now beginning to produce seeds that will spread that biodiversity across the entire landscape!

Welcome Calyx Native Nursery!

You can expect to some new faces at the Horn Farm this spring. We welcome Calyx Native Plant Nursery to the Horn Farm Center’s network of on-farm partners.

Owned by Shawnna Lockwood and her husband Davis, Calyx Native Nursery is a newly established plant nursery that specializes in species native to the Mid-Atlantic region, including rare Threatened and Endangered Pennsylvanian species.

“We encourage responsible environmental stewardship to protect humans and wildlife alike,” says Shawnna. “We want to encourage others to plant native plants for our native pollinators and to assist in repairing delicate ecosystems and food webs with which they’ve co-evolved.”

We are pleased to partner with Calyx Native Nursery and to add to the diversity of offering at the Horn Farm Center. Their focus on environmental stewardship nicely complements the Horn Farm Center’s mission and values.

As part of our mission to connect soil, food, and people in ways that improve the health and resilience of our community, theHorn Farm Center supportsbio-regional economic development through our on-farm partnerships.

It began in 2010 with our Incubator Program, which provided land, infrastructure, marketing resources, and farm business training for new farm businesses. As our programs and organizational vision evolved, we transitioned our focus to hands-on training and education. Since then, we continue to partner on-site with a number of local farm-focused businesses, including:
