Where does the time go?! It’s hard to believe that the first CSA pick up date is just over six weeks away. In the CSA (community supported agriculture) model, members pay the farmer up front for a share of the harvest during the growing season. This allows the farmer to pay for tools, seed, and feed at the beginning of the season when expenses are high and income is low.

It’s been a dream of ours to connect other small farms to you–our community. This year we are delighted that the Horn Farm will be a pick up location for five other local farms! You can get your vegetables through the Horn Farm Vegetable CSA. Whether or not you are a vegetable CSA share holder,  you can get meat, eggs, mushrooms, flowers, and wild foods & medicines delivered to the Horn Farm.  This season we are a pick up location for these other local farms: Betsy’s Flowers at the Farm (cut flowers),

Hippy Homestead (gourmet mushrooms),

Rising Locust Farm. (beef, pork, eggs, shiitake mushrooms),

Mirror Image Farms (chicken),

and, we are pleased to announce that Sentient Sisterhood (wild foods & medicines) has added the Horn Farm as a pick up location. Contact these farms directly for more information!

On Saturday, June 22, The Cycle Works of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania and 7group will be co-hosting the fifth annual Cycle the Solstice bicycle ride to benefit the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. Cycle the Solstice is a fun 30 or 62 mile bike ride through York and Lancaster counties. The ride will offer cycling opportunities in the beautiful Susquehanna River watershed while providing information about leading healthy lifestyles and supporting ecologically sustainable local food production in the region.

Each ride will begin at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. Riders will use road blazes and cue sheets to ride their chosen loop at their own pace. Along the way, riders will stop at local small farm businesses and markets for refreshments. Upon completion of their loop, riders will return to the farm to enjoy a lunch made with fresh, local ingredients and, if desired, to tour the farm to see all of the exciting regenerative practices taking place at the farm. What if everything you needed to improve or maintain your physical and emotional health could be found in your own backyard? Well, it can! Let us show you how to grow and harvest medicinal herbs and how to make plant medicine.

Plants and humans have always had a close relationship. Until recently, humans relied on plants for food, medicine, shelter, and much more. Many of us have forgotten what the plant world has to teach and to offer us. Luckily the plants are all around us, just waiting to be discovered again. The Horn Farm Herbal Intensive is an opportunity to do just that. This is your invitation to re-enter the world of plants, to rediscover their medicinal uses, and to regain the knowledge that was once shared by everyone and hopefully will be again.

During the course of the Herbal Intensive, participants will spend one weekend each month to learn a hands on approach to herbalism. With a focus on doing and creating, students will participate in all aspects of plant use and medicine making, including gardening and growing the plants we will be using, foraging for wild varieties, understanding the body systems, plant families, and how they interact, plant preparation, medicine making, and medicine usage. The gardening season has begun! The Community Gardens are open, and we still have space for you! The popular Community Garden program at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education offers soil lovers and aspiring farmers the opportunity to grow fresh, chemical-free food on prime farmland in the company of other enthusiastic and dedicated gardeners. Each plot measures 20 x 20 feet. Seasonal garden plots are open from mid-April, weather permitting, until the end of October. Seasonal plot registration can be found here. Horn Farm offers a limited number of year-round plots for more serious gardeners who wish to manage and tend their plot through all four seasons. There are just three weeks until the Heirloom Plant Sale on Saturday, May 4 from 9 to 3 at the Horn Farm!

Three Generations of Kilgore Family Farm

We will have plants grown by our Farm Interns (Hayley, Liana, Sam, and Simone), by Betsy of Betsy’s Flowers at the Farm, and by Jeremy Kilgore and his family. Starting in June, our Vegetable CSA members will pick up their first share. Also beginning in June, the Horn Farm will be a pick up location for four other local farms. Get your pastured raised beef, pork, eggs, and shiitake mushrooms from Rising Locust Farm; oyster, Lion’s Mane, and other gourmet mushrooms from Hippy Homestead; fresh cut flowers from Betsy’s Flowers at the Farm; and, we are pleased that Mirror Image Farms has chosen the Horn Farm as a pick up location for pasture raised chicken!
