Horn Farm Happenings – September 6, 2019

Cooking with edible flowers adds another dimension to a dish. Their beautiful colors and delicate flavors can truly take a dish from good to magnificent! On October 5th, from 9:30 to noon, join us for Cooking with Flowers.

Betsy Dorbian operates Betsy’s Flowers at the Farm and will be sharing her knowledge about pairing food and flowers as the instructor of this workshop. We’ll take a walk through the rows of flowers on her farm (located at the Horn Farm) and pick flowers for cooking recipes such as Lavender Blueberry Soup, Flower Embellished Goat Cheese, Savory Flower Spread, and Candied Flower Blossoms. See and taste what lavender, calendula, anise hyssop, nasturtium, and flowering basil can do for your food!
Class size is limited to ten, so register early!

On October 7 from 6 to 8, we’re exploring the art of fermentation during Kombucha Making.

Homemade Fermented Raw Kombucha Tea Ready to Drink

Kombucha is a naturally fermented, delicious beverage filled with probiotics and antioxidants which are known for their many health benefits. Dozens of varieties are available in stores, but kombucha can easily be made at home for a fraction of the cost. In this class we will discuss the origins of kombucha, the magic of the SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), the simple equipment needed to brew kombucha, and the varieties of teas and sugars that result in the best tasting kombucha. We will sample homemade kombucha and store brands for comparison. Each participant will make kombucha in class and leave with a kombucha SCOBY and recipe to continue making their own kombucha at home.
Class will be led by Jolene Smith. Jolene was first introduced to the kombucha SCOBY by her great aunt in 1999. She immediately took an interest in making kombucha, thinking that the SCOBY was the strangest organism she had ever seen. Jolene lives in York, Pennsylvania with her family, two dogs, two cats, and a fish. Her formal education is in Art & Design and Environmental Science.
Class size is limited to ten, so register early!

Tomorrow, Saturday, September 7 from 9 to 11, we’ll be exploring the fields and woods on the lookout for the plants and animals that make their home at the Horn Farm. The Living Landscape is a fun opportunity for adults and children to explore the farm with Woodland Steward Wilson Alvarez. Each month’s class is different based on what the land presents and what questions you ask. Topics covered may include:
Animal and insect tracking
Identification of wild plants
Tree and bark identification
Soil analysis
Reading the landscape
Nature observation
Bird language
Understanding water flows
Primitive skills
the living landscapeCome prepared for all weather, to get dirty, wet, and sometimes hot and sticky! This class is family and child friendly, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is per person, regardless of age. Our next The Living Landscape session is Saturday, September 7. See you there!
