Horn Farm Happenings – April 5, 2019

We are pleased to announce that we have new Youth Programs at the Horn Farm!
Engaging regularly with the natural world is especially important for the development of healthy children. There are well-documented psychological, physical, and mental benefits of playing outdoors, especially in wild spaces. We have a farm and wild spaces and we’d like to share them with you and your children!

Children’s Discovery Series We will be learning about the web of life and our part in it, engaging in some fun nature-oriented mindfulness games, playing in the dirt, getting silly, and leaving no trace in the process! Ages 6 to 12

Nature Exploration – April 28
Little Footprints – May 5
Healing Power of Plants – May 19
Seed to Table – May 26

Where the Wild Things Grow

Join us for this exciting youth summer program for ages 6-12. We will meet once a week for four weeks, July 18 through August 8. We will spend time exploring both the wild edges of the farm and the cultivated gardens.

chickens on pastureStarting in June, our Vegetable CSA members will pick up their first share. Also beginning in June, the Horn Farm will be a pick up location for four other local farms. Get your pastured raised beef, pork, eggs, and shiitake mushrooms from Rising Locust Farm; oyster, Lion’s Mane, and other gourmet mushrooms from Hippy Homestead; fresh cut flowers from Betsy’s Flowers at the Farm; and, we are pleased that Mirror Image Farms has chosen the Horn Farm as a pick up location for pasture raised chicken!

Mirror Image Farms is a pasture-based farm outside of Bainbridge, Pennsylvania. Farmers Joella and Tyler integrate nature’s principles into the way they farm. Their methods create nutrient dense soil which leads to nutrient dense food. Mirror Image Farms raises chickens on pasture and they’re fed chemical-free, non-GMO feed. 2019 Herbal Intensive
Plants and humans have always had a close relationship. Generations upon generations of humans have relied on the plant world for food, medicine, shelter, and much more. It is only recently that humans have grown separated from the natural world. We have forgotten what the plant world has to teach and to offer us. Luckily the plants are all around us, just waiting to be discovered again. This Herbal Intensive course is an invitation to do just that. It is an invitation to re-enter the world of plants and their medicinal uses, to regain the knowledge that was once shared by everyone and hopefully one day will be again.

During the course of this intensive, participants will spend one weekend each month to learn a hands on approach to herbalism. With a focus on doing and creating, students will participate in all aspects of plant use and medicine making, including gardening and growing the plants we will be using, foraging for wild varieties, understanding the body systems and plant families and how they interact, plant preparation, medicine making and medicine application. Introduction to Plant Communication
Humans have an innate ability to communicate with plants, though we have mostly forgotten how to do this. In this fun and informative workshop, we will begin to remember how to communicate with the plants as we once did intuitively. In addition, our presenter will facilitate a Music of the Plants concert. Experience the plants singing and interacting with us through the Music of the Plants device, the technology which turns the electric impulses of plants into music. You will surely have a memorable experience and will look at the plant kingdom in a different way. Find out more!

We’re about to graduate our first cohort of Woodland Stewards. woodland-stewards 18-19Their hard work, enthusiasm, love for the land, and willingness to give their best have been truly inspirational and the reason for the success of the program. We have them to thank for clearing acres of degraded woodlands, planting over 1000 trees, building three ponds, and for showing how a few dedicated people can accomplish so much good! Thank you to Andrew, Joey, Kelsey, and Heather and to their amazing teacher Wilson!
