We hope you are making plans for growing more of your own food this season! If you don’t have space at home, there are still 10 plots left in the Horn Farm Community Gardens. The season opened on Wednesday, and plenty of folks are already hard at work cultivating their plots.

In these rapidly changing times, we all need to grow more of our own food (and to support our local farmers!) That’s why we know that changing the plant sale so that you can still get the plants you need is important. We won’t be holding the plant sale the way we have in previous years. This year all sales will happen online before the sale. You can order now through Sunday, April 25. We will spend the days following the 25th packing your orders and will have them ready for pick up on Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1. We’ll be organizing the pick up times by last name. More details to come. We will reopen the store the first week of May if we have plants left to sell.

We added a few native trees and shrubs to the store this week, so even if you already placed an order, you might want to check back in.

Horn Farm is also a pick up location for meat, egg, and mushroom shares from Rising Locust Farm. Rising Locust also has pickup locations in Manheim and Lancaster.
For chicken and other meats Mirror Image Farms has pick up locations in Millersville, Bainbridge, and Lancaster. 

Currently, we have one more online class scheduled, and we are working on offering you more. If there are any topics in particular that you would like to see, please let us know!! On April 18 you can learn about Garden Design for Water Management remotely via Zoom.

There’s a lot of uncertainty right now, but there’s also a lot of opportunity for us to rethink the way we’ve been meeting our basic needs. Those of us who can will have to grow more food to share with our community.

We’ve jumped into offering some of our classes and workshops online! We rescheduled the following:

On April 1 & 3 we are offering a two-part class called Exploring the Inner Landscape.

Just as we are in relationship with the land, trees, water, and wildlife, we are also influenced by, and can be in relationship with, the archetypal energies of the planets and constellations of the zodiac. Interestingly, the inner and outer landscapes are mysteriously intertwined so that what is happening on the inside is mirrored on the outside. In this time of great political and environmental turmoil it might seem counterintuitive that by focusing on our inner lives we might have a greater effect on the world around us. In the face of climate change and the current coronavirus outbreak, our work as land stewards, farmers, and gardeners is more important than ever. The fragility of the systems we depend on to meet our basic needs has been exposed. We are continuing to prioritize growing food for ourselves and our community and teaching others to do the same. 

We’ve made the decision to cancel all on farm events, classes, and workshops at least until September 1. If you’re currently registered for one or more classes, please check your email for details about refunds. Horn Farm staff will continue farm operations growing seedlings for the plant sale and food for our CSA shareholders.

Since you can’t come to the farm right now, we are redesigning how we can get information to you. We are changing the location from in-person to online for some current classes–more details on these next week. Soon we’ll add more online classes and other video content to help you hone your ecological understanding, as well as your food growing and foraging skills.

This year’s plant sale will also be different. Though it’s not as much fun as shopping at the sale, we are asking you to order your plants ahead of time so that we can collate your order. We will spread pick up times across multiple days to limit the number of people who are on the farm at any one time.
