Horn Farm Happenings – March 20, 2020
In the face of climate change and the current coronavirus outbreak, our work as land stewards, farmers, and gardeners is more important than ever. The fragility of the systems we depend on to meet our basic needs has been exposed. We are continuing to prioritize growing food for ourselves and our community and teaching others to do the same.
We’ve made the decision to cancel all on farm events, classes, and workshops at least until September 1. If you’re currently registered for one or more classes, please check your email for details about refunds. Horn Farm staff will continue farm operations growing seedlings for the plant sale and food for our CSA shareholders.
Since you can’t come to the farm right now, we are redesigning how we can get information to you. We are changing the location from in-person to online for some current classes–more details on these next week. Soon we’ll add more online classes and other video content to help you hone your ecological understanding, as well as your food growing and foraging skills.
This year’s plant sale will also be different. Though it’s not as much fun as shopping at the sale, we are asking you to order your plants ahead of time so that we can collate your order. We will spread pick up times across multiple days to limit the number of people who are on the farm at any one time. We are extending the online sales period through April. r https://hornfarmcenter.org/shop
We still have a few vegetable CSA shares available: https://hornfarmcenter.org/csa/
We will be packing shares rather than having open bins to minimize the risk of spreading possible infection. Horn Farm is also a pick up location for meat, egg, and mushroom shares from Rising Locust Farm.
Community garden plots will open April 15 and we still have some available: https://hornfarmcenter.org/community-gardens/.
Though we can’t meet at the farm for now, please reach out to us via email, phone, Facebook, or Instagram! Thank you for being a part of the Horn Farm community!
Through April 30 – Plant Sale Pre-Sales
June 2 – Horn Farm CSA
Online classes:
April 18 – Native Garden Design for Water Management
What strange and turbulent times these are! We are sure you’re already aware that the Covid-19 virus is affecting a great number of things at the moment and recommendations have been put forth to avoid public gatherings where possible. Considering that many of our participants come from diverse areas to join us, we have decided that the most prudent course of action is to reschedule upcoming events. We will be postponing all classes and workshops scheduled between now and April 14th, at which time we’ll reevaluate whether to resume our schedule based on the situation at that time. We are working with our instructors to find new dates for these rescheduled classes and will share details sometime next week. In the meantime, we will continue our work in the fields and woods of the farm.

Essentially what we are doing is leveling the area to reduce the slope then reinforcing the base and sides with logs and rocks so that water flows more gently and does not carry away more soil. When we are finished bolstering the area, we will add fast growing live stakes (unrooted cuttings) of willow whose roots will help knit the area back together.
Learn to transform degraded woodlands into healthy, biodiverse, productive habitats through hands-on, ecologically sound techniques. This part-time program is equally suited for the professional and the layperson, for landowners and land stewards, activists, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts. No previous experience required. Next session begins April 27.
