Horn Farm Happenings – July 26, 2019

toad in handWe’re excited to offer a family-friendly event called The Living Landscape!

Come learn about the land through the lens of the species that inhabit wild spaces! The Horn Farm Center will offer monthly sessions beginning Saturday, August 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on The Living Landscape—an all-ages class.

On the first Saturday of each month, this ecological adventure walk through the woodlands and the meadows of the Horn Farm Center will spark a sense of wonder and reveal the mysteries of the land we call home. We’ll explore broad patterns of the landscape and dive deep into the details of the micro-ecosystems under rocks, inside dead trees, beneath the soil, and beyond.

stream with rock dam in the woodsEach month’s class will be different, tailored to both the dynamics of the landscape and the questions of participants. Topics covered may include: tracking animals and insects; identifying wild plants, trees, and tree bark; discovering macro-invertebrates; analyzing soil; reading the landscape; observing nature; deciphering bird languages; studying topography; understanding water flows; and honing primitive skills.

Come prepared for all weather and conditions, including the heat, mud, and water. This class is family- and child-friendly, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Register today at The Living Landscape.

Eco-printing is a method of bundling leaves and other plants in fabric, and steaming the bundle to print their natural pigments onto the fabric. On August 11, join us for a creative adventure at the Horn Farm Center. We’ll walk around the farm and find plants to transfer to a silk scarf that you can enjoy wearing. Share with your friends that you made it yourself! Make it a fun outing with friends, bring snacks and a beverage of your choice. Register early, class size is limited to 10.
